UNESCO Chair "Engineering distance education"
The chair was set up on the basis of SUAI within the framework of UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Program in April 1999.
List of activities of the chair:
- UNESCO project "Course of distance education "Development of school textbooks on the territory of Russia" was developed;
- Periodic bulletin "News of UNESCO IIEP" of the UNESCO International Institute of Education Planning (IIEP-UNESCO) is published in the Russian language;
- "IIEP News" site in Russian was made and supported an Internet;
- Internet class was established for development and testing of software to support distance education courses;
- The original algorithm for compression of images was developed. It is used for making software to support distance education courses at Internet as well as for carrying out of videoconferences;
- Network protocols and program application were developed to carry out distant lectures with the use of technologies of videoconference and direct dialogue with a student (chat), systems of distant testing, and organization of distant practical works;
- Syllabuses for distant training (on-line lectures, testes, practical works) in the field of error-correcting codes and air-navigation were developed as well as the distance education program in the specialty "Automatic systems for processing of information and management";
- "Virtual worlds of Saint-Petersburg institutes of higher education" was implemented.
