The Department of Criminal Law and Customs Investigations was borne with the Law Faculty and is appropriately regarded the most representative both in number and in research and training skill.

A. V. Bazhenov, Associate Prof., supervises the Student Scientific Society discussing in their meetings the most urgent problems of criminal law and criminology.
The Department collaborates with St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region organizations and bodies, the St. Petersburg Government and Legislative Assembly’s legal committees, the St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region courts, the St. Petersburg Statutory Court, etc.
The academic staff participates in various international scientific and practical conferences, symposia, and workshops; many lecturers undergo internship in state bodies and international organizations.
The Department’s scientific research is published by major publishing houses.
A Glimpse of History
The Department is as old as the Law Faculty itself, originally formed as the Criminal Law Department, its present name given in 2014 when the Department started training Customs Law.
Headed by V. M. Boer, PhD, Prof., Honorary RF Lawyer, SUAI’s Vice-Rector at present, since 2003 the Department has been led by F. Yu. Safin, PhD, Prof., Honorary RF Lawyer.
At present faculty lectures on about 20 specialized subjects within Criminal Law, Procedural Criminal Law, Criminal Executive Law, Forensic Medicine and Psychiatry, Criminology, RF criminal practice, legal conflict resolution, legal psychiatry, etc.
To train specialists in Customs Law the teaching staff has elaborated 10 courses and programs: Criminal Law, Procedural Criminal Law, Psychology in professional activity, Investigational basics, Criminal investigation methods and techniques, Criminal investigation expertise, Operational-investigative activity, and others.
The Department also offers Master degree program with majors in Criminal law, Criminology and Procedural Criminal Law.
Department staff
